About Hearing Tests

Hearing can be a strange thing because a person can lose quite a bit of their hearing and not realize it. They will slowly adjust things as needed as they slowly lose more of their hearing. Eventually, their TV, phone, radio, and alarms can be set on a very high volume that drives others up the wall, while those things just sound like they are at a normal volume to them. You want to learn more about hearing and hearing tests, so you are better-versed on things you should know in order to increase your chances of catching problems early on.

There are times when you should have your hearing checked routinely

Getting hearing testing isn't something that you need to have done annually like you do with things like dental checkups, but there are times when you should get one. Young children will have hearing tests throughout their school years in order to catch problems missed in infancy or to identify hearing problems that may have been progressing as they mature.

Once children grow up and finish their final year of high school, it doesn't mean they should just never have a hearing test again. In fact, it's a good idea for someone to have another hearing test a few years out of high school.

After this, your doctor may want you to have a hearing test about every ten years when you have that physical exam. After you turn 50, then many doctors will want you to have hearing tests about every 3 years or so.

There are times when something will prompt the need for a hearing test

Sometimes, something will happen that will prompt the need for a hearing test. One thing that may happen is that someone will bring it to your attention that they think you may have a problem with your hearing. They may have noticed everything in your house is louder, you talk very loud, and you ask people to repeat themselves a lot. If other people are telling you to have a hearing test, then it is a good idea to do it.

If you have had something happen and now you notice your hearing doesn't seem as good, then you should have a hearing test. For example, you may have had an explosion happen that bothered your ears and affected your hearing. If something like this happens, you don't want to procrastinate and you should have a hearing test as soon as possible.
