Understanding Why The Qualitative Fit Test Is Important

If you work in the medical field, then it is highly likely that you will need to go through some special types of processes and procedures to ensure that your personal protective equipment is up to par when it comes to keeping you safe from infections. And this includes the qualitative fit test that is needed when it comes to fitting you for an N95 mask. Keep reading to learn why the test is important.

It Ensures A Good Fit

First and foremost, qualitative fit testing ensures that your N95 mask fits properly on your face. This is extremely important when it comes to the function of the device. The mask is needed to protect you from airborne illnesses like tuberculosis and chickenpox. These illnesses are easily spread through the air when droplets of saliva or mucus are introduced to the air through a sneeze or cough. The droplets can spread many feet and will work their way easily into small openings.

So, if your mask does not fit properly on your face, then the airborne diseases can get in through the sides of the device. And, this would essentially make the mask useless when it comes to a personal protective device.

A good fit means that the mask is tight enough around the nose, mouth, and chin area. Also, the mask should be large enough that it sits over your nose and mouth, but not so big that it encompasses large portions of the face. Also, the testing will ensure that the mask is not too tight on the face through the adjustment of the mask and its straps.

It Allows For Comfort

N95 masks are not particularly comfortable as they are meant to keep you safe from any and all microbes and pathogens. This means that the mask itself will be made from thicker materials, allowing for the best protection. And, although the mask must be tight, some adjustments can be made to the style, fit, size, and straps to make sure that you are as comfortable as possible while wearing the mask. These adjustments can be made during the testing and you should speak with your testing professional to indicate if you are feeling too hot, nauseous, or lightheaded while wearing the mask.

Keep in mind that there may be some different style choices available to you in case of a fit or comfort issue, so work with the testing professional to ensure that you can find what you need while also remaining protected.
